Laboratory Service Manager Job Responsibilities
- Under administrative direction, the Lab Services Manager will be expected to plan, organize and direct the operations and staff at the Meru T&R Hospital to ensure access to quality services that aid diagnosis and treatment monitoring.
- The individual shall be responsible too for coordinating planning and performance review meetings, quality assurance, safety and accreditation interventions, and perform related work as required
Duties
- Planning, organizing, directing and supervising the work of the clinical laboratory staff
- Coordinating the development of fee schedules for laboratory diagnostic services; and reviews and makes appropriate changes as needed; determines which tests will be referred to outside laboratories in line with Meru County Health guidelines
- Defining, implementing and assessing quality control and quality assurance programs for the laboratory; assuring compliance with regulations and standards
- Setting departmental objectives and financial performance goals; monitoring of staff and resource utilization on an ongoing basis and making adjustments in staffing and task alignment to facilitate achievement of the goals and objectives
- Supervising and participating in personnel management activities for the laboratory; facilitating recruitment of staff; and motivating and mentoring of staff
- Conducting and/or guiding of supervisors of specific lab services in performance appraisals, documentation of gaps and development of plans for quality improvement; the preparation of disciplinary actions and grievance responses
- Monitoring of laboratory work performance to determine staff resource utilization; reviewing of monthly work statistics and budget reports; establishing work performance standards and adjustments of staffing levels as needed; providing for staff training and professional development
- Evaluating and making determinations on new laboratory equipment to stay abreast of new technology; facilitating assessment and selection of vendors for materials and services used by the laboratory; evaluating various test methodologies for use in the laboratory
- Administering the laboratory personnel and operating budget; approving or rejecting leave and/or recommended overtime within budget limits/constraints
- Preparing and submitting requests and recommendations for capital expenditures
- Directing the preparation of written and computerized records, reports and correspondence concerning the operation of the department; the maintenance of records and files
- Development and maintenance of contacts in person and/or via telephone/e-communication with key stakeholders as appropriate including with clinicians, managers of other facilities and services, vendors and other publics.
Qualifications for Laboratory Service Manager Kenyan Jobs
- Be a holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in Lab Science or Lab Technology or Medical Laboratory Science; and Post-Graduate Training in Management and/or Leadership
The necessary experience
- Have at least five years’ experience working in a clinical laboratory and two of which ought to be as a supervisor. The right individual shall have a combination of experience, education, and/or training which substantially demonstrates the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Thorough knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of employee supervision, development and training
- Principles, practices and procedures of clinical laboratory operations, including chemistry, microbiology, hematology, serology, coagulation, immunohematology, mycology and parasitology and terminology used in the diagnosis of disease and abnormal conditions
- Current procedures, materials and equipment used in routine and specialized laboratory testing
Working knowledge of:
- Health care practices, terminology and technology as they relate to laboratory operations
- Principles and practices of quality improvement evaluation
- Safety policies, procedures and practices as they relate to laboratory operations
- Computer applications related to the work and the general use of ICT to optimize diagnosis and management of human resources
Some knowledge of:
- Principles, practices and trends of public and business administration, including support services such as finance and budget, personnel, labor relations, planning and program evaluation
- Mathematical and statistical concepts and applications
Skill and Ability to:
- Plan, organize and direct the laboratory operations supervise and train personnel
- Appraise performance, counsel, motivate and train employees, prepare documentation and implement corrective and disciplinary measures and guide lower level supervisors in the above.
- Maintain quality controls to assure compliance with safety and accreditation regulations and requirements of the laboratory.
- Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action
- Develop and evaluate alternatives to accomplish goals and effectively utilize all available resources.
- Prepare, review and edit written reports; utilize staff effectively in the conduct of studies and projects.
- Analyze data and present ideas and information both orally and in writing
- Gain and maintain the confidence and cooperation of those contacted in the course of work.
- Communicate effectively with the wide variety of people, including physicians, nurses, other hospital staff, department managers and administrators, vendors and other health care industry personnel.
- Keep informed on current technology and trends in laboratory testing and equipment.
Conditions of Employment
- As a condition of employment, the incumbent shall:
- Commit to take responsibility for operations of a 24-hour and 7-day function, including responding to emergencies
