Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.
The main focus of HSUB relates to the Habitat Agenda goal of 'Adequate Shelter for All', and Subprogramme 5 'Housing and Slum Upgrading' of the Strategic Framework 2014-2019. The Branch works normatively as well as provides technical advice and operational support to improve access to shelter for the world's poor and other vulnerable groups, particularly in developing countries and countries in transition.
The Housing and Slum Upgrading Branch has two Units: Housing and Slum Upgrading, which are handling in a cross-cutting manner the following programmatic areas: (i) housing policy including housing delivery systems, (ii) housing rights, (iii) slum upgrading and slum prevention, (iv) sustainable building materials and construction technologies, (v) community development, (vi) housing finance, as well as, (vii) housing and vulnerable groups.
The UN-HABITAT Housing and Slum Upgrading Branch internship is for 6 months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background and the needs of the unit.
Under the direct supervision of the Unit Leader for Slum Upgrading and in cooperation with the PSUP Team, the intern is expected to accomplish the following listed duties
Research
  • Support research on on-going country activities in ACP countries, and produce reports, country data fact sheets and concept notes
  • Support the Slum Upgrading Unit in data analysis (identifying relevant data sources for slum upgrading and prevention, data analysis and presentation)
  • Support the PSUP in documentation partnership agreements and other communication or information documents to participating countries
  • Support the organization of PUSP events (workshops, international conferences, exhibitions and roundtables)
Project support
  • Assist the Slum Upgrading Unit in the development of project proposals
  • Assist the Slum Upgrading Unit in resource mobilisation, through identification of funding sources, research and project reviews Visibility and documentation
  • Support the Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme by assisting in compiling reports
  • Assist in the production of information materials, such as videos, calendars, planners, reports, pamphlets, powerpoints, webpages etc.
  • Assist in the maintenance and daily operations of digital platforms (www.unhabitat.org/psup ; www.mypsup.org)
  • Support the labelling and classification of visual materials
  • Producing other information material as needed Technical backstopping and administrative support
  • Assisting in compiling project documents and project forms as well as reports to donors
  • Support in administrative duties as may be requested by the Slum Upgrading Unit Leader
In addition, the intern will be asked to provide support in the following tasks: Participate in the daily operations of the Branch by supporting the staff in the performance of their tasks and responsibilities, including taking part in meetings, project reviews, etc.;

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Studies in Slum Upgrading, Housing, Urban Planning, Architecture, Community Management, Communication preferred.
Work Experience
  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For the internship, fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • nowledge of Spanish, French or Arabic desirable.
