Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.
At UN-Habitat, Gender Equality is viewed as a crosscutting issue among other issues like human rights, youth and climate change. A Policy and Plan for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women for 2014-19 guides the work of UN-Habitat on these issues lead by the Gender Equality Unit. A team of gender focal points has also been established in every branch and region to enhance the implementation of the gender equality work in their respective areas. In addition, an Advisory Group on Gender Issues (AGGI) was also established in 2011 to advice the Executive Director on issues relating to gender equality. All the above initiatives are geared towards ensuring that gender issues are considered in the overall UN-Habitat programming.
