Context

Barley, Malt and Sorghum are the principal raw materials used in the manufacture of beer. East African Malting Limited has the strategic role of providing competitively priced brewing raw materials of world class quality standards to meet EABL supply requirements.

The Quality Department will be responsible for developing and monitoring systems to assure the quality of barley and sorghum seed and ultimately brewing Malt, barley and Sorghum The department is involved in protecting the environment from harmful effluent. The main aim being to achieve a standard product that meets and exceeds customers/farmers expectations while keeping the environment safe.

This role works closely with the Seed section of the Agricultural Department, Agriculture Department, Barley Research Department and Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Services (KEPHIS).

Market complexity

It is critical that the company maintain high quality of seed barley and sorghum through effective Quality Control /Assurance procedures in order to remain at the top in the market and satisfy the expectations and needs of the consumer at a competitive cost.

Job Purpose 

• To provide Seed Processing Quality Assurance activities and troubleshooting within the Quality Control Laboratory.
• To provide quality technical support in problem solving within seed processing operations and carry out training on analytical techniques to the operators as well as monitor performance.

Lab Technician Job Responsibilities

• Ex-farm seed barley sampling and analysis for segregation and storage paying close attention to non-conforming deliveries.
• Monitoring quality of seed in storage to ensure viability.
• To provide quality technical support and a feedback platform to the barley and sorghum production Agri-business team
• To provide quality technical support in problem solving during processing and carry out training on analytical techniques to operators as well as monitor performance
• Maintain an elaborate traceability program for seed received, in storage, dressed and issued to farmers.
  Sample and analyze the end product (dressed seed) and report the same to the Research Manager for decision making.
• Ensuring that Laboratory chemical reagents and equipment are well calibrated. Ensure that Lab processes are accurate and check the performance of measuring systems.
• Maintain Quality Assurance data for raw material and process analysis and communication to the Quality manager/Research Manager for decision making.
• Maintain the ISO Management systems (QMS, EMS, FSMS and OHSAS) as required by the Certification body.
• Close out of all actions arising from internal and external audits of QMS, EMS, FSMS and OHSAS
• Participate in scheduled internal and external audits of all management systems as either auditee or auditors
• Training of 3rd party contracts, students and other contractors on quality procedures and continuously creating awareness on ISO systems.

Qualifications For Lab Technician Jobs In Kenya

• Diploma in Agriculture, Chemistry, Food Science, Biochemistry.
• Minimum of 2 – 3 years relevant work experience.
• Knowledge of Quality, Safety and Environmental Management systems.
• Working Knowledge in Seed handling and processing, Agricultural research, Malting or Brewing Science will be an added advantage.
