The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is a non-governmental, humanitarian organization with 60 years of experience in helping to create a safer and more dignified life for refugees and internally displaced people. NRC advocates for the rights of displaced populations and offers assistance within the shelter, education, emergency food security, legal assistance, and water,sanitation and hygiene sectors.

The Norwegian Refugee Council has approximately 4000 committed and competent employees involved in projects across four continents. In addition, NRC runs one of the world’s largest standby rosters -NORCAP, with 650 professionals, ready to be deployed on 72 hours notice when a crisis occurs

Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has been present in Somalia since early 2004 and has since expanded its Horn of Africa Programme to Kenya in 2006 and to Ethiopia in 2011. Since 2004, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has demonstrated a regional competence and expertise in working with displaced populations.

The Regional Office is based in Nairobi, Kenya with offices and operations in Somalia (Puntland, Somaliland and Mogadishu), Kenya (Dadaab and Kakuma ), Ethiopia (Addis Ababa, Dolo Ado, Shire,Gambella and Asosa), South Sudan (Juba, Awil, Alek and Aweril) and Yemen (Sa’naa and Aden).

The NRC Horn of Africa & Yemen mission is an expanding programme. NRC started its operations in Kenya in the refugee camps in Dadaab in February 2007. NRC has WASH, Shelter, Education, Food Security and Livelihood and Information Counseling and Legal Assistant programmes implemented in the refugee camps in Dadaab.

The purpose of this internship is to provide a suitably qualified ICT graduate with the opportunity to work and gain experience with NRC Nairobi, specifically ICT unit. The intern will provide assistance on NRC ICT tools, routine ICT support, network/system Security.

The selected candidate will be based in Nairobi and report directly to Roving ICT Coordinator

IT Internship Job description

  • Assisting in the ICT department in day-to-day administration, maintenance, and support of computer systems, networks and user helpdesk.
  • Provide support to users on ICT related daily problem and network/system problem solving.
  • Support ICT specialist on computer daily problem such as MS-Office, MS-Windows and Network connectivity.
  • Support on the establishment/enhancement of wireless connectivity;
  • Ensure that all the cables in the offices (networking and electrical) are properly trunked.
  • Oversee the interfacing of printers, photocopying, fax machines with computer network.
  • Responsible to monitor functioning of equipment to ensure system operates in conformance with specifications
  • Ensure that all computers on the Network, including visitors’ are free from viruses and other bugs.
  • In liaison with the ICT Assistant, follow up on all scheduled Hardware services and maintenance as per the set timetable, confirming satisfactory completion after each exercise.
  • Keep updated Centralized periodic data backup records and investigate any unsuccessful overnight backup processes, by perusing the logs. Manage all the backup media and ensure safe keeping in the Safe, and in liaison with the ICT Officer organize for copies for offsite storage.
  • Maintain the database of ICT equipment and ensure that all equipment’s released are correctly endorsed to the user and update the register regularly.
  • Perform any other official duties that may be assigned form time to time by the supervisor

Qualifications for IT Internships in Kenya

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computing or Advanced Diploma in Information Technology or equivalent
  • MCSE, MCITP A+, CCNA, CCNP or Equivalent is added advantage
  • Minimum of 3 months’ relevant work experience or proven industrial attachment during study

  • Academy college / University

Personal qualities

  • Demonstrable proficiency in technically providing user support for all typical office Information & Communication Technology Systems – LAN/WAN/WLAN technologies, printers etc
  • Attitude of keeping up to date with modern ICT trends
  • Ability to troubleshoot and provide computer solutions covering hardware and software.
  • Ability to work independently, as part of a team.
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Duty station:Nairobi
Contract period is for 6 Months with possibility of extension. Salary/benefits: According to NRC’s general directions, The candidate will observe NRC’s code of conduct and working hours for the NRC Office in Nairobi
