How I Got An Internship At UNICEF “Every Day Was A Learning Experience”

By Sera Kazungu

When you talk about dream jobs, NGO jobs usually top the list. Think of the prestige that comes from telling your friends and family that you are working at an NGO. Have you always coveted these jobs?

Career Point Kenya caught up with a source who worked at UNICEF as an Intern writer for a period of 6 months. The identity has been kept hidden to protect their privacy. She shares with us her journey at the NGO .

How did you get the internship at UNICEF?

While I was still in campus, a lecturer referred our whole class to a job site where he saw the advert for the internship position at UNICEF. He gave us an essay and said the person who wrote the best essay was going to receive a recommendation from him to do the internship. As luck would have it, he picked mine and sure enough, he recommended me for the job. It was very exciting.

What were your duties?

The duties assigned to me were writing stories from research and media monitoring. This is when you stay afloat with all relevant media trends that can be used to come up with relevant market oriented campaigns.

Was the internship paid?

The internship did not offer a pay, I was given stipends which kept me going. It paid me in terms of experience.

Having worked in the organization, how best would you best describe it?

It is an amazing place to grow and discover new talents. The environment is accepting of people and to be honest, you would not want to leave. It is a dream workplace.

How would you describe your working environment? What do you have to say about your working conditions?

The work environment could be described as serene. A place where you work, work and not want to stop working. It was that good. The conditions of work were also very reasonable.

How did you handle the pressure  if any?

Meeting their standards was hard at first, but I eventually learnt on the job. The good thing about working at UNICEF is that every day is a new learning experience.

Would you recommend someone to start an internship at UNICEF and why?

I would gladly recommend anyone to work at UNICEF because it is a good stepping ground. It offers you a rounded experience such that once you leave, you are able to work anywhere else.

What was most challenging about the internship?

Translating research into an article. The research papers were pages long and reading them in order to get content that you could write in a page was quite the hustle. Used to sometimes not even understand the research.

What do you like the most about UNICEF?

The working environment. It is just surreal. You get there and feel like you do not want to leave.

What Is Your Advice to Job Seekers Seeking to Work In an international NGO?

Be aggressive and determined. Nothing is impossible in this world. If working for an NGO is your goal, do not stop until you achieve it. Being focused is a reward in itself.
