Country Director Job Principal Responsibilities
Key area Activity
Strategic Leadership
- Providing leadership for country programme and staff;
- Leading in the dissemination of the Organisation values, vision and mission at the country level;
- Ensuring that the country SMT functions as a strong and mutually supporting leadership team;
- Leading, supporting, developing and mentoring country staff to deliver high quality programmes and projects;
- Mentoring and developing the senior manager designated by the Chief Programmes Officer as the deputy;
- Facilitating and supporting the Country Advisory Council, provide relevant levels of information to enable this council to optimize their support to the country programme;
- Participating and member of Amref Health Africa senior management team (SMT) with responsibility for representing the country programme on the SMT and for supporting collective SMT decisions back into the country programme; and
- Leading the process of organizational strengthening within the country programme.
Programme implementation, growth and development. - Directing and managing the country programme to deliver Amref Health Africa and country specific strategic objectives in line with the corporate strategy; and
- Encouraging interactions and collaboration with other Country Programmes HQ Directorates and Programme Leaders, and support participation of country programme project staff in regional projects where appropriate.
Monitoring and Evaluation
- Together with the monitoring and evaluation function at Headquarters, is responsible for ensuring that adequate monitoring, evaluation and accountability mechanisms are in place and are used effectively within the country office.
Budgets, Work plans and Risk Management
- Ensuring the efficient and effective preparation of country programme yearly work plans, budgets and prudent management of the organization’s resources within budget guidelines; and
- Ensuring timely narrative and financial reporting to donors in accordance with grant agreements.
Partnerships and resource mobilization
- Spearheading project fund raising from traditional and non-traditional donors and for local fund raising campaigns;
- Contributing to resource mobilization through proposal development, negotiation and advocacy on identified priority areas;
- Working with Corporate Headquarters, liaise with European and North American Offices to build awareness of the country programme needs, of country programme priorities and for project funding; and
- Developing networks, partnerships and liaisons with national/regional/international institutions working in the country of operations and spearhead donor collaboration and programme/project development at country level.
Knowledge Management
- Ensuring that reports from the country programme are generated and disseminated; and
- Ensuring that the knowledge gained from the country programme is documented and shared with the other Country Programmes and Headquarters, and with external partners and users, and that Country Programme staff participate in the organisation’s activities.
- Country Programme Visibility & Advocacy
- Representing the Organisation at country level and is responsible for the management of host country relations; and
- Ensuring that the country programme adheres to national laws and regulations governing the functions carried out by Organisation in the country.
Policies and standards
- Together with the Finance/Administration, HR, IT and Communications and Fund Raising functions at Headquarters, ensuring that the country programme implements appropriate policies, procedures, operational guidelines and standards within the Amref Health Africa framework.
Reports
- Ensuring Country quarterly, semi-annual and annual programme implementation reports based on agreed priority areas, work plans and budgets
Any other tasks
- Member of the Senior Management Team
- Member of the Health Programme Committee to the Board
- Member of the Kenya Advisory Council
Required Qualifications for Country Director Jobs in Kenya
Education and knowledge
- Post-graduate qualification, preferably in Public Health or related field;
- A strong understanding of managing operations in the developing world within the health development sector; and
- Knowledge/familiarity with African and other international development organizations.
Experience
- Seven (7) years overall and three (3) years at senior management;
- Proven record of building effective partnerships and strategic alliances;
- Proven people management skills in a multi-cultural environment and strong track record of developing people; and
- Is personally comfortable fundraising and has a proven record in raising substantial research/development funds.
