Background Information - Job-specific
A key objective for UNOPS is to be recognized as delivering world-class infrastructure that is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable, even in the most challenging environments. To achieve this goal, UNOPS has established a Sustainable Infrastructure Practice Group (SIPG), with articulated service lines and resources embedded throughout UNOPS global presence. The core functions of SIPG are to:
To ensure UNOPS leadership position in sustainable infrastructure, embedding sustainability across the organization to provide infrastructure that benefits the wider community and environment
To develop and articulate policies and processes; enable operationalization and managerial oversight through appropriate systems and reports; provide corporate advice and guidance; strengthen the knowledge, skills and career development of the sustainable infrastructure practitioners
Enable the organization's infrastructure practice implementation in a transparent, accountable and efficient manner in order to execute the organization's business strategy;
Identify and develop opportunities for the provision of sustainable infrastructure services for partners and clients, and ensure appropriate modalities for service delivery.
Functional Responsibilities
The Technical Writer/ Editor will support the SIPG to draft, edit and consolidate reports, publications, proposals and other documentation in line with its needs. The Technical Writer/Editor will liaise with the SIPG team so as to understand and have the ability to translate the requirements into the documentation, as well as collect, consolidate and incorporate input and feedback from relevant personnel. Coordination and integration of all inputs from all sources and maintaining consistency is an integral part of the assignment. The specific tasks of the Technical Writer / Editor can include, though are not limited to, the following:
  • Preparation of specific work packages, including content development, related to infrastructure construction, design, sustainability, contracts, and other topics, in support of current SIPG projects;
  • Edit and/or proofread both technical and non-technical reports, publications and other written documents;
  • A significant understanding of the nature of the documents and contents associated with complex UN and donor relationships in order to deliver focused technical documentation for project outputs;
  • Preparation of project proposals/concept notes on behalf of SIPG for submission to various donors/clients;
  • Research of complex infrastructure related activities and preparation of briefing to facilitate writing tasks;
  • Develop documents based on multiple sources, including secondary data, interviews, minutes, memos and so on;
  • Compile and incorporate feedback on documents from various sources;
  • Conduct additional research where necessary for context and reference purposes;
  • Ensure that all documents follow the UNOPS standardized writing requirements;
  • Assistance in the above mentioned in other UN languages where possible;
  • Additional tasks related to editing, writing and proofreading for clarity, as required.
  • The Technical Writer/Editor will be home-based with missions as required. The modalities of the missions are to be agreed with SIPG.

Education/Experience/Language requirements
Education:
  • An advanced University Degree in Journalism, Communications, Humanities or a related field.
Experience:
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in a similar field. A first level university degree may be acceptable if accompanied by additional 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience and familiarity with multilateral organizations such as the UN, World Bank or simliar is essential.
  • Languages:
Knowledge of French and/or Spanish highly desirable.
