Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has been present in Somalia since early 2004 and has since expanded its Horn of Africa Programme to Kenya in 2006 and to Ethiopia in 2011. Since 2004, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has demonstrated a regional competence and expertise in working with displaced populations. NRC has mainly focused on Somalis who are displaced by the ongoing conflict and more recently by the drought and famine.
The Regional Office is based in Nairobi, Kenya with offices and operations in Somalia (Puntland, Somaliland and Mogadishu), Kenya (Dadaab, Kakuma and Molo), Ethiopia (Addis Ababa, Dolo Ado, Shire and Asosa) and Yemen (Sa'naa).
The NRC Horn of Africa mission is an expanding programme. NRC is seeking to recruit Literacy and Numeracy Teachers; to take the lead in implementation of the NRCs alternative education programmes and conduct on-the-job teacher training and mentoring of inexperienced teachers.
The selected candidates will be based in Kakuma and report directly to the Project Officer-Skills for Life

Job description
- To prepare comprehensive work plans that will enable the teacher plan for learning activities in a given academic year.
- To deliver content using learner friendly methods as per the syllabus in your field of specialization.
- To monitor the implementation of the training syllabus and ensure all modules are complete before the end of the academic year.
- To cooperate and support the entire team of other teachers in the centre.
- To submit evaluations, attendance sheets and reports each month to the Project Officer.
- The trainer should keep proper records including: Schemes of work, Lesson plans and lesson notes, Record of work covered, Learners' evaluation and progress records, Stock records for all training materials, tools and equipment in your work station.
- Monitor, follow-up and report on learner absences in classes and report this to the Project officer.
- To be open for and participative in monitoring and supervision to improve the quality of the program.
- Hold Primary Teachers Education Certificate (P1)/Early Childhood Development Education Certificate (ECD)/special needs education (SNE) from recognized institution or any other recognized relevant teaching qualification or Diploma in community development.
- Have at least five years of teaching experience in Primary School, pre-primary or any other formal or non-formal learning institution.
- Experience in community development initiatives.
- High level of personal integrity and sensitivity to adult psychology.
- High standard of English methodology including oral skills.
- Knowledge on use participatory and learner centred methods, children rights and the global education standards.
- Have knowledge and experience in some of the following topics: counselling trauma in children, children with special needs, child protection
- Basic understanding of the local language is desirable.
- Understanding of the basic entrepreneurial skills will be an added advantage.
