You must be excited that you made it to the interview stage and are now doing all you can in preparation so you can ace the interview. You are going through expected answers to various questions that you believe are going to come up during the interview.
Interviewers may look past some of the questions, but there are those that will determine if you are the right candidate or not. One of these important interview questions is; How much do you expect us to pay you?
“A candidate should quote a reasonable amount when answering this question. You cannot say you want to be paid double what you were earning previously just because you know the company pays well, or quote an amount that is not in the company’s budget,” says Sheila Cheptoo, a Recruitment Officer at Corporate Staffing Services.
So, How Do You Answer The Salary Question?
If the salary is already quoted in the job advert, then your task will be to negotiate a good amount from the range given. If the salary range stands at 80K to 100K, ensure that the deal you get is leaning towards the higher side.
This does not mean that you go straight for the maximum amount, do your research on the company to know how much they pay for your position and also take into consideration what you were earning before.
If the salary is not quoted, most candidates have a hard time answering this question and with the interview anxiety, may end up saying the wrong thing which may cost them the job.
To answer this question, think about the job duties and responsibilities, do your research on how much people in your position are paid and use it to come up with a range. Don’t give a fixed number.
Sample Answer To How Much Do You Expect To Get Paid
For job candidates with experience – “According to the research I have done and duties listed in the job, similar positions pay a salary of X to Z. With my skills and experience, I expect a salary ranging between Y and Z”
If you are a recent graduate, you can say, “In regards to the research I have done, similar positions pay between X and Y. I would like to recieve a starting salary in this range.”
The amount of salary an employee earns varies between company to company and different positions pay differently, so ensure you do your research well to get yourself a good deal with the employer.
