Role context

Build Africa has changed considerably over the last few years. The number of donor funded multi-year projects has increased hugely as a result of our strategy and improvements in the quality of concepts and funding applications, resulting in a growing percentage of Build Africa’s overall turnover coming from these projects.
The Kwale Girls Project is our largest and most complex project in which we aim to improve the educational opportunities for thousands of girls in 72 school communities.

Overall purpose

The Project Manager will have overall responsibility for the implementation of the multi-year Kwale Girls Project, supported by several donors includingthe National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund. Working closely with the project partners and the Project Management Officer at Build Africa UK, the Project Manager will lead a project implementation team in carrying out the agreed project activities, including Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL).

Project Manager Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for ensuring activities are implemented to the level and quality as per agreed workplans. Make changes to workplans as necessary and as agreed by the Project Management Team.
  • Responsible for financial management of the project; monitoring expenditure versus budget; providing explanations of variances to relevant finance managers.
  • Supporting the development of the teachers’ toolkit and training of trainers, including recruiting and supporting consultants to deliver some of the activities.
  • Ensure Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning activities are carried out as per the MEL workplan; organizing and leading MEL committee meetings; ensure key findings and learnings are shared and prepare quarterly and annual narrative and financial reports on project progress.
  • Manage a team of project staff from three project partners through providing management support, guidance and on-the-job capacity building of the project team.
  • Liaise with all project partners and ensure they are kept up-to-date with project progress. This also includes liaising with key stakeholders in Kwale County to ensure they are updated regularly with progress and results of the project.
  • Responsible for ensuring Child Safeguarding and Child Protection issues are integrated across project management and delivery and any issues that arise areresponded to appropriately.
  • As key member of the Project Management Team ensure regular meetings are held and minutes kept.

Qualifications For Project Manager Jobs In Kenya

  • Relevant degree from a recognized institution
  • At least 8 years of work experience in project management
  • Proven experience in managing similarly-sized multi-year grant-funded projects
  • Proven experience of managing project implementation teams
  • Proven experience in working with partner organisations
  • Knowledge and experience of Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning approaches, methods and tools
  • Good knowledge and understanding of project cycle management
  • Experience in Child Protection and Safeguarding programming
  • Alert to Child Protection concerns
  • A track record of producing high quality reports that provide for thought leadership on critical and strategic issues
  • Impeccable communication skills especially writing and presentation in English
  • Proven experience and understanding of educational programmes, working with girls or onchild protection issues (Desirable)
  • Knowledge of the coastal region of Kenya, and Kwale County specifically

  • Understanding of the cultural sensitivities of working in varied settings and able to engage and motivate Build Africa and partner staff;
  • Commitment to working with children and community members in a participatory and empowering way;
    Strong people skills with the ability to develop good working relationships with a range of stakeholders from diverse backgrounds;
  • Enjoys and excels in leadership, demonstrating the ability to bring people together for shared goals;
  • An enthusiastic and positive attitude, with a can-do approach;
  • A presence, strong personality, and a results-orientated hands-on approach to work.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
