How An Office Romance Destroyed My Career

Relationships are beautiful and magical, however,office romances have different outcomes for different people. For Edna, the romance she thought was leading to more than an office fling, cost her all that she held dear.

“It made me always feel like I was inferior. Every time I would look at him, I saw his respect for me vanish. It was a terrible feeling.” Says Edna Mwendwa

This is her story

When I started working for my company, I did not plan to have any relationship . But you know how these things are. I first started noticing that my supervisor always gave me special attention. We flirted and eventually, it became an affair.

We would stay late at the office talking about all things except work. After some time had passed, we became so attached to each other that we could not control ourselves. I couldn’t sit five minutes at my desk without seeing him and he too, shared my predicament.

We quickly shifted our relationship to a more intimate level and for me, life at the office became a holiday. I started missing deadlines and making silly mistakes. Daydreaming had become a part of me.

The supervisor and I decided to take a step back from our relationship as it was starting to take a toll on our work. It was difficult to do, but we held strong.

Weeks later, the worst happened. I found out that I was pregnant, I calmly went and discussed it with my boyfriend. He shouted at me and told me to get rid of it.

“What grown woman does not know how to take care of herself?”he asked me.

We did not speak on this issue again. A month later,a new lady was employed in the office. Hardly had she stayed a week, than my supposed boyfriend started dating her! I felt crushed. My emotions started getting the best of me.

I started crying at the office and avoiding all my colleagues, afraid that they would notice the bump that had now started to show. My boyfriend started sending me insulting messages.

I approached the new lady to tell her what had happened and instead of empathizing with me,she ridiculed me.
Life at the office was never the same. I fell into depression and soon, my work became really bad. I couldn’t meet deadlines, I was always late to work and my moods also took a toll. As fate would have it, I was eventually fired.

Life for me has never been the same. If I get a new job, I will never have a relationship at the office. Time will heal my wounds.
