4 Ways Your Co-Worker Is Bad For Your Career

By Selipha Kihagi

Most workplaces will demand that as an employee, you work with a team. These are the people you share an office with and work side by side with to get things done for the company’s benefits, they are your co-workers.
While being in good terms with co-workers is good for you and the company as a whole, the relationship you keep with your co-workers determines the advancement or downfall of your career.

That said, here are 4 ways your co-worker is bad for you;

1. You trust your co-workers enough to confide in them
Have you thought your co-worker means well for you, that they are concerned about your success at the job? Well, it is time you dropped that thought and adopt the fact that your co-worker is competition.

People take up a job that is below their qualifications to work their way up and will eliminate any obstacle along the way. If you choose to share your secrets with this co-workers, they will not hesitate to use it against you.

2. You believe their way works better than yours
If you have been in a position where you are considering to start working like your co-worker does, to follow the schedule they use or strategies that you think work best, then this is about you. Just because you think your co-worker’s way is better does not make it true.
Believe that even though it is not how others do it, if it works for you, it’s the best way.

3. You want to be in your co-workers favour at all times
It is admirable that you don’t like conflicts or back to back arguments that spark feeling, but if you want to succeed in your career, this is inevitable. You cannot stay away from an argument by keeping silent even when you think your co-workers are being unreasonable.
You must speak out if you want to be taken seriously; spark an argument if you think it necessary for a particular task to be done well.

4. You are friends with your co-workers and can’t stop talking
Friendships at the workplace should be approached with caution. If you spend a lot of time together on the weekends, let it stay that way.
Don’t start conversations recapping how your weekend was and having never-ending talks about your social life. More often than not, you will drift away from your work .

Be careful how you handle your co-workers because you never really know them. They could become your worst nightmare in the snap of a finger.
