Do you sometimes feel like an older colleague undermines you and the work you do? Well, You are not alone.
More and more young people are joining the work force and this sometimes cause a bit of tension at the office, as older workers begin to feel intimidated.Such a working environment may make work unbearable and may make you resent going into the office.
According to Perminus Wainaina, a recruitment manager at Corporate Staffing services, the answer to age disparities is as simple as working together. “Each age group adds its own distinct value to the workplace.”He says.
Here are four ways to help you get along with an older co-worker
1. Allow them to mentor you
Show a willingness to learn from older employees who have more experience than you in terms of work and employer expectations. This will give you an avenue to bond and get to know them better.
2. Share your knowledge with them
As a young employee, you are more tech savvy and familiar with new technologies. You can bond with an older co-worker by offering to help them adapt to new technologies, E.g how to use things like social media. This will go a long way to ensure that you get along with them.
3. Be modest
You need to acknowledge that people who are older than you tend to have more experience. No matter how much superior you are to them in your job description, humble yourself before them. Do not try to show that you are better than them by undermining their skills. Respect is better earned than demanded
4. Communicate
To avoid conflicts, you need to learn how to effectively communicate concerns to your older counterparts. This will create room for consultation on unclear issues ensuring that a positive relationship is fostered.
