To do so we routinely analyze 1000s of soil samples a year to better understand our programmatic impact on soil health and to use soil data to strategically guide and make recommendations for our agricultural innovations programs.

As all of our agricultural programs depend on the health of the soil, our soil lab will be a critical tool that will be used to guide and drive the impact, growth, and sustainability of the organization across all of our current and future countries of operation. In this position, the Analytical Soil Lab Manager will be responsible for a fundamental component of our data that is of critical importance for the strategic operations of the organization

Soil Lab Manager Role

Management of lab operations

  • Effectively and efficiently manage supporting lab staff, including a full-time lab assistant and seasonal casual employees.
  • Lead the training and professional development of lab staff.
  • Coordinate and assist in the logistics of sample delivery. This entails maintaining positive working relationships with KEPHIS and an intimate familiarity with the
    soil importation process.
  • Create and maintain a systematic and efficient sample processing, analysis, and storage system.
  • Facilitate the stocking and procurement of laboratory supplies.
  • Coordinate and facilitate sample delivery and shipment from the various countries and departments throughout the organization.

Spectroscopic soil analytics

  • Function as One Acre Fund’s internal expert on spectroscopic soil analysis and independently be able to troubleshoot any issues with all equipment.
  • Use mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIR) and partial-least squares regression (PLS) analysis to measure and evaluate soil properties.
  • Estimate annual throughput of 2000+ soil samples per year.
  • Create and manage large databases.
  • Systematically archive and maintain the databases over time.
  • Contribute to report writing as needed.

Maintenance of lab equipment

  • Ensure the entire laboratory and analytical equipment is maintained in excellent working condition at all times.
  • Responsible for the working and coordinating with the procurement office for all equipment and supplies.

Our Requirements for Soil Lab Manager Jobs in Kenya

  • We are seeking an exceptional professional with 2 to 5+ years of work experience, and a demonstrated long-term passion for agricultural development
  • Extensive experience working in and managing analytical laboratories.
  • Previous experience with and a working knowledge of mid-infrared reflectance spectroscopy.
  • Top-performing undergraduate background, preferably in analytical chemistry, laboratory management, or any environmental or agricultural sciences with a strongemphasis on laboratory analytics and/or spectroscopic tools.
  • Include test scores and academic performance indicators on your CV.
  • Fluency and strong data analysis skills in Excel and R.
  • Leadership experience at work, or outside of work.
  • Humility. We are looking for passionate professionals who combine strong leadership skills with good humor, patience, and a humble approach to service to join our growing family of leaders.
  • A willingness to commit to living in rural areas of East Africa for at least two years – this is a long-term, career-track role.
  • Language: English required with a strong knowledge of Kiswahili preferred.
