CV Writing Tips
By Kennedy Omondi,
Recruiters will always read between the lines when analyzing a CV and each mistake is interpreted and given a meaning as to who the person really is.” Says Justus Ng’etich, a HR professional at Corporate Staffing.
This is the main reason why recent graduates fail to secure jobs as much as they may be qualified. Structural mistake include the format, enlisting, use of figures and words, font type, and capitalization.
1. You are Inconsistent
When your CV in mixed up, the recruiter get the notion that you are inconsistent and will probably be the same when handling the tasks associated with the job; something no employer wants.
This is evident in CVs with mixed font types and size (besides titles and subtitles), inconsistent capitalization of proper nouns, etc.
2. Lacking organization skills
When a CV is all jumbled up in its structure, the recruiter concludes that the applicant is disorganized. This is evident when the applicant mixes the format.
For example, having his personal details aligned differently from the other contents. If the content are centralized it should be the same all through. This makes it easier for the recruiter to skim through.
3. Poor Attention to Details
In a CV, the structure should pay emphasis to your skills and strong attributes. How is this relayed? This is achieved through capitalization and bolding.
This will in turn make it easily visible to the recruiter as he skims. When this is not reflected in a CV, the recruiter can see the lack of attention to details, something that is important across all careers as a key competency.
4. Lack of Creativity
The structure of your CV should be able to communicate your level of creativity. This does not mean the use of graphical content, but in the choice of wordings used. Cliché phrases should always be avoided as they only portray your lack of creativity. Explain in details rather than just stating “Result Oriented”.
5. Lacking Precision
The length of your CV also forms a basis of the structure. A long CV to an employer will always show lack of precision. On the other hand, a short and direct CV inclusive of the details shows a candidate that is precise. Bolding and capitalization can also be used to indicate this.
Make sure to avoid these mistakes to improve your chances of landing that dream job. Have a second perspective on your CV to counter-check rather than depending on the conventional computer for this as this is can not be reflected in a computer.
