Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
The UNEP Division of Communications and Public Information internship is for 6 months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 - 40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
The overall duty of the intern is to assist with the coordination of the news and media functions of the Division of Communications and Public Information. Under the direct supervision of the Head, News and Media Unit, the intern will perform the following duties
  • Assisting with media accreditation
  • Providing assistance in the maintenance of the media contacts database
  • Providing support in organizing press conferences and media events
  • Undertaking research tasks as needs arise
  • Assisting in uploading content on the News Centre
  • Supporting media training activities and field trips

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Studies in Communications, Information Technology, Public Relations, Environmental Sciences, Business Administration or a related field.
  • Basic html coding and database management skills are a requirement.
Work Experience
  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For the internship, fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
