Background Information - Kenya
The East Africa Hub
Located in Nairobi, Kenya, the East Africa Hub manages a growing portfolio of engagements, including associated strategic and operational risks. The East Africa sub-region currently consists of an established Operations Center in South Sudan, an Office in Somalia and a portfolio of engagements managed by the Kenya based East Africa Hub office. This includes primarily transactional projects in partnership with the Nairobi based UN Agencies UN-Habitat and UNEP, and multiple 'operational' projects in Tanzania, Burundi, Uganda, Kenya and several Atlantic and Indian Ocean island states.
The East Africa Hub is currently being reconfigured to ensure, in keeping with the regional strategy, an enhanced scope of engagements and improved operational excellence in the growing area of responsibility.
UNOPS in Nairobi plays a critical role in providing management services for its life-saving peace building, humanitarian and development operations; supporting projects on behalf of a range of partners and creating real results that matter for people in need. UNOPS EAOH is implementing projects worth more than $80 million in eastern and southern Africa and is helping its partners achieve project goals in sustainable project management, sustainable procurement, sustainable infrastructure, human resource management and advisory services.
Functional Responsibilities
Duties/Responsibilities: Under the overall supervision of the Head of Project Development Office and in accordance with UNOPS style guidelines,
  • To review, proofread and edit draft reports, publications, evaluations and other information
  • materials taking into account grammar, style, content and format, as per UNOPS guidelines
  • To check for and correct repetition and spelling or grammar mistakes as well as to improve
  • phrasing and language use for easier reading
  • To review and edit the presentation style, format (spacing, indentation, capitalization, paragraphs, headings etc.)
Details of how work will be delivered
To achieve the objective of the assignment, the contractor(s) will:
  • Upon request from UNOPS KEOH, proofread and edit the content of reports and publications submitted by KEOH
  • Have meetings and regular exchange of information with Communication Officers and respective Programme Officers responsible for the publication in order to agree on the tasks, scope and timeframe and receive feedback
  • Double check any unclear meanings with the original drafter or translator and render in improved English    
Education
  • University degree in English, International Affairs, English, International Development, Communication, Journalism or other relevant fields from an English-speaking university
  • At least 2 years of proven experience in editing reports and publications in English
  • Experience in editing reports, research papers, publications and familiarity with UN terminology will be an asset  
Experience
  • Experience in UNOPS or other UN agencies an asset
  • Three years minimum work experience required
  • Fluency in oral and written English and French is required.
  • Working knowledge of French is desirable
