Our client is a one of the largest salt producer in East and Central Africa with 100% of raw salt been harvested locally. The company was started over 30 years ago and recently they have invested in a new refinery which has increased production by great margins.
Job Purpose
To develop a HR strategy aligned to the organization’s corporate strategy, goals and targets. To direct, plan, organize and manage the Human Resources department and its activities, in order to effectively lead, advise, manage and guide; management, stakeholders and employees on people issues.
In addition to developing and coordinating policies and procedures that are reflective of the needs of the business, whilst meeting the organizations, industry and statutory requirements. Ensuring a culture of oneness is sustained for the sake of meeting individual employee and overall company goals.
Key Responsibilities
  • Implementation of HR policies and procedures to support the achievement of the overall corporate goals, taking full responsibility for management and delivery of the same, taking the lead in adopting new standards to support in planning and the continuous improvement of departmental operations, in order to improve efficiency.
  • Ensure the department’s management, and service level towards all its customers, are at an optimal levels, through effective operations in all aspects of employee transactions, compliance with collective bargaining agreements, legislation, policies, procedures and regulations, coordinating activities and systems so as to promote best practices.
  • Provide full relationship support regarding people issues such as conflict resolution, performance management, collective bargaining agreement interpretation and termination, by effectively diagnosing issues, recommending solutions and ensuring successful implementation of agreed recommendations.
  • Direct and support the organization in developing strategies related to talent management, learning and development, performance management, succession planning and retention.
  • Maintain day-to-day financial control of the human resources department within agreed budgets, ensure finances related to the department are correctly administered and monitored.
  • Ensure services within the human resources department are adequately managed, staffed and resourced with appropriate development and succession plans, so as to ensure continuous service provision.
  • Create and promote a supportive team culture within the department and organization as a whole, one that proactively searches for realistic solutions to challenges, understanding there is no situation extraordinary enough to excuse lack of courtesy and respect towards anyone, whilst fostering a culture of interdependence amongst teams verses the need to work in isolation.
  • Build external relationships with service providers, statutory bodies, and communities in order to support the management, growth and development of the department and its overall impact on the organization and its operations.
Key Performance Indicators
  • Recruitment – fulfilling the organizations recruitment needs within realistic timeframes and with quality staff
  • Training and development – identifying and meeting training needs for the betterment of staff performance and output
  • Talent management – establishing and managing the talent pool so as to ensure its long-term positive impact upon the organization
  • Staff retention and productivity – monitor retention and productivity levels, ensuring action is taking in view of any obvious areas of concern
  • Operations – oversee operations so as to always be providing a service that is positively effective in meeting the organization’s and its people’s needs
  • Employee relations – ensure the relationship between the organization and its people is always at the forefront of whatever decisions; actions and solutions are drawn up, making effort to engage with the staff on all levels in order to promote a sense of oneness.
  • Performance management – oversee the performance management process ensuring realistic and meaningful actions are taken towards over and under achievers
  • Occupational safety and health – ensure the full implementation of health and safety policy and practices, reflective of the organization’s needs, which meet statutory/legal requirements
  • Union management – develop positive relationships with the Unions as an effort to manage the collective bargaining agreement process in a manner that is beneficial to both staff and the organization as a whole
Key Competencies/Skills
  • Proven generalist experience including the ability to work at both strategic and operational levels
  • Fully conversant and up-to-date with all aspects of employment law and HR best practice, with a good working knowledge of HR systems
  • Experience in the development and implementation of employment policies and procedures
  • Ability to work autonomously and flexibly, being pro-active and self-motivated
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, ability to prepare and present to director level with a focus upon influencing, persuading, coaching and negotiating
  • Excellent planning and organisation skills, being proficient in the use of MS Office applications, email and the internet, with an ability to have attention to detail and be organised
  • Co-operative and supportive team player, able to create HR communications appropriate for the audience
  • Analytical and creative problem solving skills with a consulting mindset
  • Self motivated to learn and adopt new concepts and willingly participate in new projects.
  • Demonstrable interpersonal sensitivity with the ability to be independent in decision making unaffected by personal biases, with a focus on best practice and what is most beneficial for the organisation as a whole
  • Ability to create, manage and oversee the department budgeting process
Required Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelors and Masters in relevant field
  • Professional people management qualification
  • 7 to 9 years of experience in people management, a minimum three of which should be at Senior Management level
  • Experienced in the implementation and management of HR software systems
  • Working knowledge of multiple human resource disciplines including compensation practices, organisational diagnosis, employee and union relations, diversity, performance management, legal and statutory respective employment laws
  • Experience in Kaizen project management and/or ISO implementation and management.
